Imperial Garage in the Winter Palace
In 1910, the architect N. Kramskoi built a modest garage in the courtyard between the Winter Palace and the Small Hermitage for the Imperial Family’s automobiles.

The fleet of cars and vans for Court officials and staff of the Winter Palace were located on Bolshaya Konyushennaya Square off the Nevsky Prospekt.

The garage was built of cinder blocks and kept warm using hot air from a boiler pumped under the floor. The cast-iron base for refueling is still preserved. There was an underground gasoline tank on the right.

The amusing and contentious confrontations between Empress Marie and Court officials in 1914 to transfer her cars from the Anichkov Palace to the Winter Palace will be revealed in my book.
