Palace Menu

The archives have preserved a large collection of menu cards and the attendees ‘Diary of a Dinner’ documents from the Imperial palaces.

For ceremonial dinners, a concert program was attached to the menu. The history of the manufacture of menu cards is fascinating. My forthcoming book reveals the details, along with the numbers required for thousands of guests and artists involved.

An example (below) of a two-part card with menu and concert program is the gala dinner held in the Catherine Palace in Tsarskoe Selo on the occasion of the marriage of Grand Duchess Marie Pavlovna and Prince William of Sweden on April 20th, 1908.
